Diversity

If you are a general contractor looking to diversify your subcontractor base, contact us.

As M/WBE Division Director for the City of Winston-Salem, Evon Smith was instrumental in raising the average M/WBE participation rate from 2% to 16%

Sustainable Community Resources supports small and minority-owned businesses by connecting them to valuable resources. Most recently, area general contractors have experienced low turnout of minority contractors for bid opportunities. In response to this need, SCR has led numerous outreach efforts, which include a regional approach to recruiting and educating M/WBE’s.  We provide general contractors sub-contractor outreach services and municipalities with best practices for diversity and inclusion in their contracting programs.  In addition, we create contractor education programs to assist contractors in how to gain local participation from subcontractors in new markets.  SCR is adept at developing functional databases providing preconstruction information sessions, and coordinating joint ventures and mentorship programs.

Our principal developer, Evon Smith, designed a contractor's resource center that served the Winston-Salem M/WBE community for five years. Key stakeholders, including contractors, general contractors, minority and women-owned businesses and state-wide public officials, participated in strategic planning sessions to identify the services needed to support minority contractors. The contractor resource center addressed issues ranging from bid development and cash management to construction and contractor compliance. She also designed and led subsequent HUB (historically underutilized business) academies.

The resource center developed customized solutions based on regional needs assessment with members. The members represented Forsyth, Davidson, Guilford, and Surry counties. The Center provided access to hardcopy plan specifications, technology, upcoming bid notifications, along with training, seminars and networking opportunities. The President of SCR, Evon Smith, was instrumental in helping to foster collaborations between large majority general contractors and smaller HUB contractors.
